Huntsville Alabama & Madison County Area History

In The Heart Of The Tennessee Valley
Spectacular Mountains, Lush Forests And Landscapes

Huntsville is named for John Hunt, the first settler
in the area. However, Hunt did not properly register his claim, and land in the area was purchased by Leroy Pope, who named it Twickenham in honor of the home city of his relative, Alexander Pope.

However, the town's name was changed to honor John Hunt because of anti-English sentiment during the War of 1812. Madison County was created in 1808 and named after President James Madison.

Huntsville later became a flourishing cultural, commercial and social center thanks to the cotton industry. Some 1,000 pounds of cotton per acre was consistently harvested by the farmers of Madison County.

In 1855 the Memphis and Charleston Railroad was completed. Industrialization gained momentum with the completion of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway. Later, watercress was sold all over the east and Huntsville became the "Watercress Capital of the World."
